On Sunday 26th June, Scouts from 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 10th Harpenden and Explorers Scouts from Shackleton could be seen at Batford Springs all having a Lark in the Park.
40 Scouts from around the District put on a show for the many attendees of the event, undertaking the River Dash challenge, the inaugural running of the Scout Cannon Race, and the annual Tug-of-War contest.
There was stiff competition in the River Dash with great effort, and good sportsmanship, from all who took part. The fastest team was 2nd Harpenden's team 1 with a time of 3 minutes and 7 seconds, narrowly beating 3rd Harpenden's Team 1 and then 5th Harpenden.
2016 saw the re-establishment of a Scout Cannon Race in the District. The teams had to take a cannon apart, carry it across an obstacle course, rebuild it and fire it in the quickest time possible. Like the River Dash, it was a real test of teamwork. A mixed team from 2nd, 3rd and 5th were the second fastest, just ahead of a team from 4th Harpenden, but the fastest time was achieved by 10th Harpenden with an impressive time of 1 minute and 59 seconds. The scouts were then narrowly beaten in an exciting race by a team of Explorers from Shackleton.
Sadly the Sea Scouts from Luton were unable to attend for the annual Tug-of-War contest, so two teams of twenty Scouts entertained the crowds with a show of strength and teamwork, before losing with dignity to over 60 younger kids in a grand finale.
On top of that all the Scouts were able to enjoy in the sunshine a Catapult shy, Test-Your-Pull, Whirly-buzz and Splat-the-Rat.
Thanks to the 15 Adults who came down to help, and a special thanks to Ray Vassie for pulling it all together (and even making the stunning cannons!)
